November 24, 25, 26 & December 2, 3, 9, 10
The Virginia & Truckee Railroad offers its annual Holiday train, the Candy Cane Express, on selected dates in November and December. This whimsical train, steeped in Christmas spirit, has become a fun local tradition for families of all ages.
The magical Candy Cane Express provides a 50 minute journey over the 140-year old V&T railroad route, including a trip through the enchanting Candy Cane Tunnel. Sip hot cocoa or hot cider. Enjoy cookies and candy canes while singing carols. Listen to a reading of the 1832 classic “T’was the Night Before Christmas.” Sit back, relax, enjoy the mountains, beautiful scenery, and especially the excitement of the children. You may even see some wild horses along the ride.
This video was done back in 2010 by our new webmaster Jim (new as of early 2017, in 2010 he was still just a pesky railfan — Jim). While the Christmas Candy Cane VT Train experience may vary from year to year, this video will give an idea of the onboard experience on our special holiday season trains.
Spoiler Alert: If you watch carefully you’ll see a very tall elf named Tom Gray, VP of the V&T Railroad Company. At 3:17 in the video you’ll see our favorite elf Peggy, a Virginia City local who dresses in period costumes on some local trains.
