1.5-Hour Train Ride from Carson City to Virginia City
(Passengers will have a 3-hour layover in Virginia City and 1.5 hour return trip.)
You will board at the Eastgate Depot in Carson City (map) for an all day adventure. Starting just above the Carson River Canyon, the train runs along Mound House by U.S. Hwy. 50, then picks up the historic, Comstock Era V & T route.
WHAT YOU’LL SEE.
Watch for mines and silver ore veins. You’ll ride through Tunnel No. 2, and see the American Flat, the site of a gold and silver mining town that lobbied to become the state capital, but disappeared when the ore did. You’ll see the Overman Pit Embankment (– 300,000 cubic yards of fill rising 120 feet above the east side of the mining pit. You may even see wild mustangs, their lineage proves to go back over 400 years. The train will pass the Scales/Water Stop where 260,000 tons of ore were weighed here in one year (1876) and 40 trains a day picked up water.
