Nevada’s Wild Horses Seen From a V&T Train

by Leave a Comment

On April 29 and May 2, 2017, I was able to shoot video footage of wild horses in Mound House and Virginia City, Nevada. The first shots were taken on the rear platform of a special Virginia & Truckee Railroad train from Carson City to Virginia City. The railfans onboard rode up to see the Carson City Orchestra play at Piper’s Opera House.

The video is not really a train video. The point is to show you Nevada’s wild horses that I saw as we passed through Mound House that day. The wild horses were running ahead of the train until they could find a suitable place to get off the tracks. As we go around the Thunderbowl Speedway (Thunder Bowl?), we see the horses from a distance.

A few days later on May 2, 2017, I was at the Virginia & Truckee Engine House. I happened to notice some horses out back. I climbed up onto the platform of the Carson City coach and took some photos and video. As noted in the video, it’s not my best production — the horses are the focus.

Riding these V&TRR trains in Nevada on the V&T Railway tracks is a great experience. I suspect people like the wild horses even more than the historic railroad coaches! The most important train element in the video is the diesel locomotive you see — the D-4 diesel. It came to the V&T in November 2016. In the video you see the D-4 diesel making its first revenue run.
